What is Ramie?
Ramie (also referred to as China grass, grass linen, and grass cloth) is a bast fiber crop. It's one of the oldest vegetable fibers, having been used for thousands of years for all sorts of fabrics — including ancient Egyptian mummy wraps!
Today, China is a pioneer in ramie fiber production and other main producer countries are Taiwan, Korea, the Philippines and Brazil.
Ramie is quite a unique fiber — it's fine and lustrous but also stiff and coarse. Because the ramie fibres are uneven, ramie fabric often looks similar to linen.
Ramie is also versatile — when ramie fibers are spun wet, they create a soft, silky yarn and when ramie fibers are spun dry, they create a hairy, stiffer yarn. This means that ramie fibers can be created into fabric that's perfect for silky dresses and blouses or into more durable, tougher fabric that is suitable for jeans.
Outside of fashion, ramie has been used for towels, drapery, linen, and even electrical insulation material.
