A Note About Product/fabric Colours

We photograph almost all of our fabrics and products ourselves and take great care to represent their colours as accurately as possible.

However, colours may appear slightly different in real life due to lighting, photography and variations in individual screen and monitor settings. For this reason, we cannot guarantee an exact colour match.

We kindly ask that you keep this in mind before placing your order. If an exact shade is essential to your project, or you're unsure about a colour shown in our photographs, we recommend contacting us before purchasing.

Please note that slight colour variations between our photographs and the actual product are not considered faults and are not, on their own, grounds for a refund.

More About This Fabric

A firm favourite here at Beyond the Pink Door, our 6 Wale Stretch Cotton Corduroy is one of those fabrics we love welcoming back year after year.
With its beautifully soft, velvety surface and distinctive chunky ribs, this corduroy has all the charm of traditional cord with the added comfort of stretch.
The 6-wale construction means there are approximately six raised ribs per inch, giving the fabric a bold, textured finish that adds character to even the simplest garments. The soft pile catches the light beautifully, creating subtle changes in tone and highlighting the gorgeous depth of colour.
Made from 98% cotton and 2% elastane, this fabric offers an impressive 30% stretch across the width, providing extra freedom of movement and making it particularly comfortable for garments such as fitted trousers, skirts and dungarees.
The fabric has a lovely balance of softness and structure, making it suitable for garments that need to hold their shape while still feeling comfortable to wear.
It's a wonderful option for creating classic autumn and winter wardrobe staples, from perfectly fitting corduroy trousers and A-line skirts to relaxed shackets, pinafores and everyday jackets.
Available in a selection of beautiful, rich colours, this is a fabric you'll find yourself reaching for again and again.
Whether you're sewing your first pair of corduroy trousers or adding another favourite jacket to your handmade wardrobe, our 6 Wale Stretch Cotton Corduroy is a lovely fabric to work with.

Sewing Notes

Corduroy is a lovely fabric to sew with, but its distinctive raised pile means there are a few things worth keeping in mind. - Recommended needle: Use a universal needle, size 80/12 or 90/14, depending on the number of layers and thickness of seams. A stretch needle may be helpful if you experience skipped stitches. - Cutting: Corduroy has a nap, so always cut your pattern pieces in the same direction. Running your hand along the fabric will help you identify the direction of the pile. - Nap direction: Cutting with the pile running upwards often creates a richer, deeper colour, while cutting downwards can give a slightly lighter appearance. Either is fine, but consistency is important. - Pattern placement: The raised wales should generally run vertically down the garment. Check that the direction of stretch works with your chosen pattern. - Stitching: A regular straight stitch of approximately 2.5–3mm is a good starting point. The fabric has some stretch, so use a narrow zigzag or stretch-compatible stitch where seam flexibility is required. - Pressing: Always press from the wrong side on a soft towel or needle board to avoid crushing the raised pile. Use gentle steam and avoid applying too much pressure. - Seam finishing: Finish raw edges using an overlocker or zigzag stitch to help prevent fraying. - Topstitching: Slightly longer stitches can give a lovely finish to pockets, waistbands and seams. - Bulk: Trim and grade seam allowances where necessary, particularly around waistbands, collars and pockets. - Prewashing: Prewash before cutting to allow for any shrinkage. A little sewing tip: When sewing corduroy, a walking foot can be particularly useful for preventing the layers from shifting against one another. It's also worth using a slightly longer stitch when topstitching to help the stitches sit neatly amongst the raised ribs.
