Who says denim has to be plain? Our Botanical Sketch Floral Denim Jacquard is a beautiful example of how a classic fabric can become something really special.This gorgeous denim features a striking, oversized floral design, with large blooms, delicate leaves and intricate botanical details spreading across a rich, dark indigo background. The flowers are picked out in contrasting shades of soft blue, giving the design an almost hand-drawn appearance, reminiscent of vintage botanical illustrations.
What makes this fabric particularly special is its woven jacquard construction. Rather than being printed onto the surface, the beautiful floral design is created as part of the weave itself. This gives the fabric a wonderful sense of depth and texture, with the contrasting blue threads bringing the intricate botanical pattern to life.
At 330gsm, Botanical Sketch is a substantial denim with plenty of body and structure, making it an excellent choice for garments that need to hold their shape. Despite its heavier weight, the fabric has some flexibility, allowing for comfortable movement in relaxed, structured garments.
Made from 70% cotton and 30% polyester, this denim combines the familiar character of traditional denim with the added interest of an intricately woven jacquard design.
With a generous 150cm width, it's a fabulous choice for all sorts of dressmaking projects, from statement jackets and structured skirts to dungarees, trousers and beautiful everyday accessories.
And just like traditional denim, this fabric will develop its own character over time. The colour may gradually soften and fade with washing, wearing and exposure to sunlight, creating that lovely lived-in appearance that makes denim so appealing.
I can just imagine this made into a fabulous cropped jacket, a simple A-line skirt or a relaxed pair of wide-leg trousers. The oversized floral design is striking enough that you really don't need a complicated sewing pattern.

Sewing Notes
- Recommended needle: Use a jeans needle, size 90/14, or 100/16 when sewing through multiple layers. Always test on a scrap first.
- Cutting: Use sharp dressmaking scissors or a rotary cutter. The substantial weave makes this fabric relatively stable to handle, but take care to keep everything flat and accurately aligned.
- Pattern placement: The oversized floral jacquard is the real feature of this fabric. Consider how the flowers will be positioned across your finished garment, particularly on front panels, pockets and the back of jackets.
- Pattern matching: Allow a little extra fabric if you would like to match the floral design across seams or pockets.
- Stitching: A straight stitch of approximately 3–3.5mm is a good starting point. Test your stitch length on a scrap before sewing your garment.
- Thread: A good-quality polyester thread is ideal. Contrasting topstitching can look particularly effective on denim, especially around pockets, collars and jacket seams.
- Seam finishing: Finish raw edges using an overlocker or zigzag stitch to prevent fraying.
- Pressing: Press from the wrong side using a pressing cloth and a low iron temperature, testing first to protect the woven jacquard design.
- Reducing bulk: Grade and trim seam allowances where necessary, particularly around collars, cuffs and waistbands. A hump jumper can be useful when sewing across thicker seams.
- Pattern choice: Choose patterns designed for medium-to-heavyweight woven fabrics. Simple, structured styles will allow the gorgeous botanical design to shine.
- Prewashing: Prewash before cutting to allow for any shrinkage. Wash separately and inside out, as denim may release some colour during washing.
