More About This Fabric

Painter’s Garden French Terry is one of those prints that instantly catches your eye.

Large, expressive flowers sweep across the fabric in soft brushstroke-style layers, giving the design the appearance of a hand-painted floral canvas. Shades of blush pink, coral, lilac, cream, ochre and leafy greens sit against the deeper background, creating plenty of depth without feeling overly bright.

The French terry base gives you the comfort and stretch of a knit fabric while offering a little more substance than a standard jersey. It has the characteristic looped reverse of French terry and a smooth printed face, making it a lovely choice for garments that need softness, comfort and a bit of structure.

The scale of the floral makes this particularly gorgeous for simple garment shapes where the print can really do the talking — think sweatshirts, relaxed dresses, pullovers, cardigans and casual jackets.

Sewing Notes

Recommended Needle:
Ballpoint / Jersey needle 75/11–80/12.

French terry is generally very enjoyable to sew and is a great choice if you are moving from woven fabrics into sewing with stretch fabrics.

Use a ballpoint or stretch needle to avoid damaging the knitted fibres. A size 75/11 or 80/12 should work well depending on the weight of the fabric.

Use either a small zigzag stitch & regular thread or use Maraflex thread when sewing on a regular sewing machine so that your seams retain some stretch. An overlocker is ideal for constructing and finishing French terry garments, although it isn't essential.

Avoid stretching the fabric as you sew, particularly around necklines, hems and shoulder seams. A walking foot can be helpful if your machine tends to feed the layers unevenly.

Because of the scale of the print, spend a little time thinking about pattern placement before cutting. For garments with a centre front or prominent pockets, you may want to position your favourite flowers deliberately.

Prewash before cutting, using the same method you intend to use for the finished garment, as cotton-rich French Terry in particular can shrink slightly on their first wash.
