A Note About Product/fabric Colours

We photograph almost all of our fabrics and products ourselves and take great care to represent their colours as accurately as possible.

However, colours may appear slightly different in real life due to lighting, photography and variations in individual screen and monitor settings. For this reason, we cannot guarantee an exact colour match.

We kindly ask that you keep this in mind before placing your order. If an exact shade is essential to your project, or you're unsure about a colour shown in our photographs, we recommend contacting us before purchasing.

Please note that slight colour variations between our photographs and the actual product are not considered faults and are not, on their own, grounds for a refund.

More About This Fabric

Sometimes it's the little details that make a fabric truly special, and our Bluebird Lane Embroidered Border Double Gauze is a perfect example.
This gorgeous cotton double gauze combines beautifully understated blue stripes with a delicate chocolate brown embroidered floral border, creating a fabric that's full of charm and character.
The main fabric features alternating stripes in two soft shades of blue, woven into the fabric rather than printed onto the surface. The gentle contrast between the colours gives it a relaxed, timeless feel, while the characteristic lightly crinkled texture of double gauze adds wonderful softness.
But the real star of this fabric is the beautiful embroidery running along one selvedge.
Measuring approximately 10cm deep, the embroidered border features rows of tiny flowers, delicate decorative motifs and fine chocolate brown lines. The warm brown embroidery contrasts beautifully with the cool blue stripes, creating an unexpected combination that works so well together.
The border is perfect for incorporating into the hem of a blouse, dress or skirt, allowing you to create a beautifully decorative finish without any additional embellishment.
Made from 100% cotton, this double gauze consists of two lightweight layers of fabric joined together at regular intervals. The result is a soft, breathable fabric with a gently textured surface and a lovely relaxed appearance.
At just 108gsm, Bluebird Lane is beautifully lightweight, with a moderate drape that's particularly suited to loose-fitting garments and comfortable everyday clothing.
With a width of 125cm, it's a lovely choice for breezy summer tops, softly gathered skirts, relaxed dresses and easy-to-wear blouses.
I can just imagine this made into a simple blouse with the embroidered border running along the hem, or a pretty summer dress where the gorgeous chocolate brown embroidery becomes a beautiful feature.
This is definitely one of those fabrics where a simple sewing pattern will allow the details to shine.

Sewing Notes

Recommended Needle:
Universal needle, size 70/10 or 80/12

Bluebird Lane is a beautifully soft cotton double gauze with a delicate embroidered border. Double gauze is lovely to wear, but its loose weave and naturally crinkled texture benefit from a little extra care when cutting and sewing.
- Recommended needle: Use a universal needle, size 70/10 or 80/12. A fine, sharp needle can also work well. Always test on a scrap first.
- Cutting: Use sharp dressmaking scissors or a rotary cutter. Take care not to stretch or distort the fabric while cutting, and avoid pulling the layers out of alignment.
- Border placement: The embroidered border runs along one selvedge and is approximately 10cm deep. Plan your pattern layout carefully if you'd like to incorporate the embroidery into your garment.
- Stripe direction: The yarn-dyed stripes run across the width of the fabric, perpendicular to the selvedge. Consider how this will affect the direction of the stripes on your finished garment.
- Stitching: A regular straight stitch of approximately 2.5mm is a good starting point. Avoid pulling the fabric through your machine.
- Thread: Use a good-quality polyester or cotton thread.
- Seam finishing: Double gauze can fray, so finish raw edges with an overlocker, zigzag stitch or French seams where appropriate.
- Pressing: Use a low to medium iron temperature and press gently from the wrong side. Avoid flattening the natural crinkled texture or pressing directly onto the embroidery.
- Interfacing: If your pattern requires interfacing, choose a lightweight option and test it first to ensure it doesn't make the fabric too stiff.
- Pattern choice: Relaxed styles with simple construction work particularly well. Avoid very fitted garments that rely on precise shaping.
- Prewashing: Prewash at 30°C before cutting, as cotton double gauze can shrink. Allow the fabric to dry naturally before cutting.
A little sewing tip: Because the embroidered border is along one selvedge, you may need to position your pattern pieces differently from a standard cutting layout to make the most of it. I'd recommend working out your placement before purchasing your fabric, as you may need a little extra meterage depending on your chosen pattern.
