What makes this fabric particularly special is its woven jacquard construction. Unlike a traditional printed denim, the animal design is woven directly into the fabric, creating a wonderfully rich texture with a soft, velvet-like surface. Sewing Notes
- Recommended needle: Use a jeans needle, size 90/14, or 100/16 when sewing through multiple layers. Always test on a scrap first.
- Cutting: Use sharp dressmaking scissors or a rotary cutter. The fabric has a directional design and velvet-like texture, so check the direction of the pile and cut all pattern pieces in the same direction for a consistent appearance.
- Pattern placement: Take a little extra care when laying out your pattern pieces. The woven animal jacquard is the star of this fabric, so consider how the design will sit across your finished garment.
- Stitching: A straight stitch of approximately 3–3.5mm is a good starting point. The heavyweight construction benefits from a slightly longer stitch than you might use for lightweight dressmaking fabrics.
- Thread: A good-quality polyester thread is ideal. Decorative topstitching can look particularly effective on this fabric, especially for jackets, pockets and structured seams.
- Seam finishing: Finish raw edges with an overlocker or zigzag stitch to prevent fraying. Consider grading seam allowances to reduce bulk where several layers meet.
- Pressing: Take care to protect the gorgeous velvet-like jacquard surface. Press from the wrong side using a pressing cloth and a soft towel underneath to prevent the raised design from becoming flattened. Avoid excessive pressure.
- Handling bulky seams: Use a hump jumper or folded scrap of fabric to help your sewing machine travel smoothly over thicker areas, particularly around collars, cuffs and waistbands.
- Pattern choice: This fabric works particularly well with simple, structured designs. Look for patterns suitable for heavyweight woven fabrics, allowing the beautiful animal jacquard to take centre stage.
- Prewashing: Prewash according to the recommended care instructions before cutting. A test sample is advisable to check for shrinkage and any changes to the textured surface.
A little sewing tip: With a fabric this striking, sometimes less really is more! A simple jacket or structured skirt with minimal detailing will showcase the beautiful woven animal jacquard. For jackets, consider using a lightweight lining to give the inside a lovely finish and make the garment easier to slip on and off.
