More About This Fabric

Folklore Garden is one of those fabrics where you'll want to spend a little time looking at all the tiny details.

Set against a deep navy ground, the main design is arranged in decorative, almost tile-like sections filled with colourful flowers, trailing foliage, trees and little animal motifs. Bright pink, orange, cobalt blue and fresh green give the print a wonderfully vibrant folk-art feel.

But the real star of this fabric is the border. Running along both selvedges, a fabulous hot-pink decorative band is accompanied by rows of tiny flowers and foliage. It gives you so many possibilities for creative pattern placement — use it along the hem of a dress or skirt, across a sleeve, on cuffs, a yoke or even as a statement detail on a shirt.

The viscose base is beautifully soft and fluid with plenty of drape, allowing the print to move beautifully when worn.

Because the border appears on both sides of the fabric, you have even more flexibility when planning your layout and can really make those special details part of the finished garment.

Sewing Notes

Recommended Needle:
Microtex 70/10 or fine Universal needle.

As this is a border print with the border running along one selvedge, we recommend planning your pattern placement before cutting. You may need to position your pattern pieces differently from the suggested cutting layout to make the most of the border.

Think about where you'd like the border to sit on the finished garment — it could make a fabulous dress or skirt hem, sleeve detail, shirt hem, yoke or feature panel.

Bear in mind that using the border may affect the amount of fabric you need, particularly if you want the border to appear continuously around a garment. We recommend checking your pattern pieces against the usable width and border placement before deciding on your required meterage.

Viscose can be fluid and prone to shifting while cutting, so lay the fabric on a flat surface and allow it to relax before you begin. Cutting in a single layer can be particularly helpful with this fabric, both for accuracy and for controlling exactly where the print and border fall.

Use a fine, sharp needle — approximately 70/10 or 80/12 — together with a good-quality polyester thread. Fine pins or clips will help prevent marking or distorting the fabric.

Staystitch curved and bias-cut areas such as necklines and armholes soon after cutting to prevent them from stretching out of shape.

For dresses and skirts, particularly fuller or bias-cut styles, allow the finished garment to hang before hemming as the viscose may drop slightly.

Finish seams with an overlocker, narrow zigzag or your preferred enclosed seam finish for a neat result.
