A Note About Product/fabric Colours

We photograph almost all of our fabrics and products ourselves and take great care to represent their colours as accurately as possible.

However, colours may appear slightly different in real life due to lighting, photography and variations in individual screen and monitor settings. For this reason, we cannot guarantee an exact colour match.

We kindly ask that you keep this in mind before placing your order. If an exact shade is essential to your project, or you're unsure about a colour shown in our photographs, we recommend contacting us before purchasing.

Please note that slight colour variations between our photographs and the actual product are not considered faults and are not, on their own, grounds for a refund.

More About This Fabric

If you love classic denim but fancy something with a little more personality, our Railway Blues Striped Denim is a wonderful choice.
This gorgeous fabric features a distinctive combination of broad indigo and deep navy stripes, beautifully complemented by fine contrasting lines of white and muted red. The different stripe widths give the design a lovely sense of rhythm, creating an eye-catching pattern that feels both timeless and contemporary.
There's something wonderfully nostalgic about this fabric. The bold vertical stripes have a subtle workwear-inspired character, reminiscent of traditional railway uniforms and vintage utility clothing, but with a modern twist that makes it perfect for today's handmade wardrobes.
At 335gsm, Railway Blues is a substantial heavyweight denim with a moderate, structured drape. It has plenty of body to hold its shape, making it particularly well suited to jackets, trousers, skirts and dungarees.
Made from 70% cotton and 30% polyester, this cotton-rich denim combines the familiar character of traditional denim with the durability of a blended woven fabric.
The combination of the bold stripes and deep indigo tones means this fabric would look particularly striking made into a simple garment where the pattern can really take centre stage.
I can just imagine a fabulous cropped jacket with the stripes running vertically, or perhaps a pair of relaxed wide-leg trousers. You could even have a little fun with the stripe direction, using horizontal stripes for pockets, cuffs or a waistband to create an interesting contrast.
With a generous 155cm width, there's plenty of scope for all sorts of dressmaking projects.
Whether you're planning a classic everyday garment or something with a little more character, Railway Blues is a fabulous fabric for creating pieces you'll enjoy wearing for years to come.

Sewing Notes

Railway Blues is a substantial woven denim with a beautiful striped design. Taking a little care with pattern placement and seam finishing will help create a lovely professional-looking garment.
- Recommended needle: Use a jeans needle, size 90/14. For thicker seams or multiple layers, a 100/16 may be more suitable.
- Cutting: Use sharp dressmaking scissors or a rotary cutter, taking care to keep the fabric flat and the stripes aligned.
- Pattern placement: The stripes are a key feature of this fabric. Consider how they'll run across your finished garment, particularly on jackets, trousers and skirts.
- Stripe matching: Take extra care when cutting pieces that will be sewn together. Matching the stripes across side seams and centre-front openings can create a beautifully balanced finish.
- Stitching: A straight stitch of approximately 3–3.5mm is a good starting point. Test your stitch length on a scrap first.
- Thread: A good-quality polyester thread is ideal. Traditional denim topstitching thread or a contrasting shade could look particularly effective.
- Seam finishing: Finish raw edges with an overlocker or zigzag stitch to prevent fraying.
- Pressing: Press from the wrong side using a pressing cloth and a low heat setting, testing on a scrap first.
- Reducing bulk: Grade and trim seam allowances where necessary, particularly around collars, cuffs, waistbands and pockets.
- Topstitching: A slightly longer stitch of approximately 3–3.5mm will create a lovely finish on pockets, seams and jacket details.
- Prewashing: Prewash before cutting at 30°C to allow for any shrinkage or colour loss.
A little sewing tip: This fabric would be wonderful for experimenting with stripe direction! Try cutting patch pockets, a collar or a waistband with the stripes running horizontally against the vertical stripes of the main garment. It's a simple way to make your finished garment look extra special.
